About Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence

Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN), founded in 1979, is a Boulder, Colorado–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides confidential emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, legal advocacy, housing support and violence-prevention education to survivors of interpersonal violence and their families.

In the last 2–3 years SPAN has expanded family-focused healing programs and made its shelter pet-friendly (completed September 2024), while continuing large-scale crisis response: in 2024 the organization reported approximately 9,000 shelter nights and thousands of hotline responses, and its recent annual reporting shows continued service to more than a thousand adults and children across outreach, housing and legal programs.

Notable achievements

In 2024 SPAN reported responding to thousands of crisis-line contacts and providing roughly 9,000 nights of shelter to survivors (covering hundreds of adults and children), demonstrating sustained emergency capacity.

Programmatic reach and housing impact (recent years)

Across its outreach, legal advocacy, counseling and transitional housing programs SPAN served more than a thousand adults and children in recent annual reporting and provided housing assistance to hundreds of clients while delivering violence-prevention education to thousands of youth and community members.
