About CRESTED BUTTE SEARCH AND RESCUE, INC.
Crested Butte Search and Rescue (operating as Crested Butte Mountain Rescue/CBMRT) is an all‑volunteer, tax‑exempt 501(c)(3) organization that responds to backcountry emergencies in the forest and wilderness surrounding Crested Butte, Colorado.
The team provides technical search and rescue, wilderness EMS, avalanche response and public safety education while partnering with local fire, EMS and regional SAR organizations to cover roughly the Crested Butte/National Forest area.
In the past 2–3 years CBMRT has executed multiple complex rescues (including helicopter extractions and avalanche responses), supported large community events as on‑site medical/aid presence, and continued annual fundraising and public education programs to sustain operations and equipment needs.
Notable achievements
Complex helicopter extraction (Apr 26, 2023)
Executed a coordinated helicopter‑assisted extraction of an injured skier with wilderness medical care and interagency coordination.
Avalanche rescue at Snodgrass (Feb 14, 2024)
Conducted a nighttime toboggan evacuation and avalanche mitigation to rescue and transfer an avalanche‑injured snowboarder to ambulance care.
Ongoing community operations and new facility planning (2024–2025)
Sustained high operational tempo with multiple rescues in 2023–2025, provided event medical/aid coverage for local races and fundraisers, and is incorporated into plans for a joint emergency services campus with the local fire district.
