Mission

The Nicholas P. Sims Library's mission is to provide the best library services to the residents of Waxahachie in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible by: promoting reading and cooperative literacy programs; offering opportunities for self-development to people of all ages; recognizing that knowledge and information are presented in many formats; providing reference and genealogical resources to preserve the heritage of Waxahachie and Ellis County; supporting the educational, civic, and cultural activities of the community; maintaining collections reflecting past, present, and future; and making library materials available to all library card holders.

About NICHOLAS P SIMS LIBRARY AND LYCEUM

Nicholas P. Sims Library and Lyceum is a long-established public library in Waxahachie, Texas (opened April 26, 1905) that operates as a 501(c)(3) style, donor-facing institution providing in-person and digital library services to the local community. The library combines traditional collections and local-history/genealogy resources with contemporary services such as a bookmobile, digital streaming (Kanopy), study pods, teen makerspace resources and online databases. In the last 2–3 years the organization has continued to expand outreach and digital access, maintained a large collection (well over 100,000 physical and digital items), and sustained operating scale consistent with recent Form 990 filings (FY2024 reporting revenues in the mid seven-figures). The library also preserves and programs from its historic Lyceum auditorium, hosting concerts, talks and community events that connect cultural programming with local heritage. The library maintains active partnerships (including contributing collections to regional digital archives) and is an accredited member of the state library system, positioning it as a community cultural anchor and an active recipient of public and private support.

Named a 2025 recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ National Medal for Museum and Library Service in recognition of sustained, high-impact service to its community.

Historic founding and continuous service

Opened in 1905 as one of the earliest public libraries in Texas and continues to operate and serve Waxahachie from its original site, including preservation and active programming in the historic Lyceum auditorium.

Collection and service expansion

Maintains a large collection (including extensive local history and genealogy holdings) and has expanded outreach and digital services in recent years—examples include a bookmobile, streaming media access, study pods, and youth/teen programming.
