About DENTON COUNTY FRIENDS OF THE FAMILY INC

Denton County Friends of the Family (DCFOF) is a Denton, Texas–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that delivers crisis response, emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, prevention education, and longer-term housing supports for people impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and sexual abuse. Founded in 1980, DCFOF operates countywide programs including a 24-hour crisis line, residential shelter and transitional housing, trauma-informed counseling, a legal advocacy team, community prevention initiatives (including Camp HOPE and partnership with Explorium Denton), and a nonprofit resale operation (Upscale Resale) to support programming. The organization publishes annual reports and audited financials and reports multi-year program impact: comprehensive crisis response, thousands of legal and advocacy contacts, and targeted services for children and families exposed to violence, while advancing a multi-year Family Justice Center project to co-locate coordinated services.

Notable achievements

Emergency shelter & crisis response (2024)

In 2024 DCFOF sheltered hundreds of survivors and their children (137 adults and 64 children) for a combined 11,332 nights and operated a 24-hour crisis line that answered several thousand calls and texts, providing immediate safety planning and referrals.

Legal advocacy & advocacy services

DCFOF’s legal and advocacy teams deliver large-scale client support — providing over 13,000 legal services to more than 1,200 clients and delivering tens of thousands of advocacy contacts in a single year to help survivors navigate protection orders, court processes, and systems-based supports.

Prevention, children’s services, and organizational milestones

DCFOF runs Camp HOPE and year-round therapeutic and childcare supports for children exposed to domestic violence (hundreds of children served through play therapy, childcare, and mentorship). The agency also expanded community partnerships (including Explorium Denton) and advanced a Family Justice Center project as a multi-year capital milestone to centralize trauma-informed, coordinated services for survivors.
