About DOCUMENTARY ARTS INC

Documentary Arts Inc is a Dallas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit (founded 1985) that produces documentary films and books, curates exhibitions, and preserves large photographic and audiovisual archives. The organization operates the Texas African American Photography (TAAP) Archive and produces community-facing programs that foreground vernacular and documentary visual culture. In the last 2–3 years Documentary Arts has amplified TAAP through a major copublished book (Kinship & Community, with Aperture, 2026), public programming with museums and cultural partners, and new film distribution and community screenings (including the film Quiet Voices in a Noisy World). Recent tax filings and philanthropic support show sustained grant funding and growth in contributed support, enabling expanded publishing, exhibitions, and archive access.

Notable achievements

Texas African American Photography Archive (TAAP)

Founded in 1995 by Alan Govenar and Kaleta Doolin, TAAP is a large research and community archive of vernacular and studio photography documenting Black life in Texas (tens of thousands of images) used for exhibitions, publications, and research.

Copublished Aperture book: Kinship & Community

Copublished with Aperture in 2026, Kinship & Community presents selections from the TAAP archive (150+ images) and extends the archive's reach through a major publication and related public programs with museums and curators.

Documentary film production & distribution

Documentary Arts has produced award-recognized films (including projects distributed with NOVA and screened at MoMA and international festivals) and in recent years released new work with community screenings and streaming availability to broaden public access.
