About FERGUSON ROAD INITIATIVE

Ferguson Road Initiative (FRI) is a 501(c)(3) grassroots, membership-driven backbone organization serving Far East Dallas since 1998. FRI convenes neighborhood associations, Crime Watch and Volunteer-in-Patrol groups, faith communities, businesses, schools and service providers to advance public safety, economic development, communications, and quality-of-life initiatives. FRI operates a range of donor-facing programs — notably Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), community communications (FRIdays magazine and NewsFlash), volunteer engagement and project coalitions — and has led recent local wins including bond inclusion for the White Rock Hills Recreation Center and continued expansion of community outreach and services in 2022–2024.

Notable achievements

VITA tax assistance impact

FRI’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) initiative (established 2005) has recruited and trained IRS-certified volunteers each season and, over its history, completed more than 18,000 tax returns, helping retain over $30 million in federal refunds in the local community and reducing reliance on high-cost refund loans.

Economic development facilitation

FRI has played a central convening and advocacy role in Far East Dallas economic revitalization, facilitating hundreds of millions in investment in mixed-income housing, retail and infrastructure (site communications cite figures in the high hundreds of millions since 1998) and contributing to substantial increases in local property values and private investment.

Public capital and facility wins

FRI led community organizing that secured inclusion of the $18.1 million White Rock Hills Recreation CENTER in the 2024 bond program and has supported multiple capital projects and park/trail improvements (including the Trinity Forest Spine Trail and CreekSide bike trails) that expanded recreation and public infrastructure in the service area.
