About Community Music Center of Houston

Community Music Center of Houston (CMCH) is a 501(c)(3) performing arts and music education organization founded in 1979 that focuses on the preservation, appreciation, and performance of musical traditions rooted in Black heritage. CMCH operates education programs, community ensembles, and public performances that center underrepresented Black composers and genres while training youth and adult musicians. In addition to long-running ensembles such as the Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra and the William Grant Still String Quartet, CMCH produces community festivals, the annual Legacy Project (Black Music Month programming), youth vocal and orchestral training, and recurring performances at major Houston venues. Recent organizational activity includes a 2024 leadership transition (appointment of a new Director), ongoing summer camp and youth programming, and production activity continuing into 2025–2026, supported by annual fundraising and public arts grants.
