About ACLU FOUNDATION OF TEXAS INC

The ACLU Foundation of Texas is the 501(c)(3) public-interest and legal-education arm affiliated with the ACLU of Texas. It supports and conducts litigation, public-education, and impact-focused legal work to defend civil liberties across Texas. The organization operates statewide with offices and staff who bring strategic litigation, policy advocacy, and community partnership to issues including immigrants’ rights, LGBTQIA+ equality, voting rights, free speech, and students’ civil rights. In recent years the foundation has led or supported precedent-setting lawsuits, administrative complaints, and public campaigns to protect Texans’ constitutional rights.

Notable achievements

Blocked Texas "drag ban" (S.B. 12)

Led litigation that resulted in a federal district court issuing a permanent injunction declaring the 2023 statute commonly called the "drag ban" unconstitutional, blocking enforcement of the law and protecting freedom of expression for performers and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Major litigation to halt S.B. 4 (anti-immigrant law)

Spearheaded and joined federal lawsuits and emergency filings (including 2024–2026 efforts) seeking to enjoin provisions of S.B. 4 that would expand state immigration enforcement, arguing the law violates federal supremacy and threatens immigrant families across Texas.

Defended transgender and nonbinary students’ rights

Filed federal Title IX complaints and civil-rights actions against school districts and charter schools (including 2023 complaints in the DFW area) to challenge policies barring transgender and nonbinary students from programs, facilities, or participation in activities aligned with their gender identity.
