About Historic Houston

Historic Houston operates programs to deconstruct houses slated for demolition, salvage and resell historic building materials, and relocate endangered historic structures. The organization ran a member-access Salvage Warehouse in the historic 1887 Howard Oil Company Seedhouse and served an 11-county region of southeast Texas. In recent years Historic Houston has been winding down its Salvage Warehouse operations: the warehouse closed effective January 18, 2025 and remaining inventory has been liquidated through a series of final online and on-site auctions held in 2025–2026. The organization remains a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) and has continued to file Form 990s through the 2024 fiscal year.

Notable achievements

Long-running Salvage Warehouse (regional resource)

Operated a Salvage Warehouse at 1200 National Street (opened 2003) that reclaimed and redistributed historic building materials to the public and professionals across an 11-county region for more than two decades.

Deconstruction & relocation projects

Executed house deconstructions and select historic relocations to preserve threatened structures and recover reusable materials for re-use and reuse education.

Inventory liquidation and orderly wind-down

Announced closure of the Salvage Warehouse effective January 18, 2025 and organized multiple final online/on-site auctions in 2025–2026 to liquidate remaining inventory in a staged, public process.
