About GENETIC INFORMATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Genetic Information Research Institute (GIRI), founded in 1994, is a private nonprofit research institute based in East Palo Alto, California, focused on the study and characterization of repetitive and mobile DNA elements across eukaryotic species. GIRI develops and maintains Repbase (Repbase Update), a curated database of representative repetitive sequences, and publishes Repbase Reports, a monthly e-journal reporting newly identified repeats.

GIRI also provides computational tools and submission services (including Censor and RepbaseSubmitter) to support repeat annotation in genomic projects. The Institute operates an active, subscription-based model for Repbase and has published annual “Year in Review” reports documenting substantial database growth and species coverage through 2024–2025, with ongoing updates into 2026.

Large annual growth (2025)

Expanded Repbase by 12,092 entries in 2025, bringing the total to 114,924 entries at year-end 2025 (following a 10,197-entry increase in 2024), and covering repeats from over 2,400 species.

Ongoing publication and tool support

Publishes monthly Repbase Reports to disseminate newly identified repeat sequences and provides computational tools (Censor, RepbaseSubmitter) and online services to support genome annotation and repeat submissions.
