About ALLIANCE FOR SMILES INTERNATIONAL INC
Alliance for Smiles International (AfS) is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2004 that provides free comprehensive cleft lip and palate care through short-term surgical missions, permanent treatment center partnerships, and local clinical training. The organization pairs volunteer surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and allied professionals with local hospitals and partners (often Rotary clubs and local foundations) to deliver surgical care, dental services, speech therapy, and follow-up support. In the last 2–3 years AfS has run multiple documented missions and training programs — including a Gazipur, Bangladesh medical mission in February 2024 and multi-country activity summarized in its 2025 annual highlights (notably missions in Ecuador and Ghana). Those reports describe measurable outputs such as multi‑day surgical camps (e.g., 40 surgeries and 88 dental procedures in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and 33 surgeries with 55 dental procedures in Greater Accra) and clinician-training programs that expanded local capacity. AfS emphasizes sustainability: it operates permanent Treatment Centers that provide follow-up care and has developed a Virtual Education Initiative (launched during the COVID‑19 travel restrictions) to continue provider training remotely. The organization remains volunteer-driven and donor-supported and has continued public fundraising and events (including anniversary galas and fellowship programs) while leadership has received international recognition for human-rights and global-health contributions.
Notable achievements
Documented surgical impact (2024–2025)
Across missions reported in 2024–2025 AfS completed dozens of cleft surgeries and scores of dental procedures in short-term campaigns — for example, a Guayaquil, Ecuador mission completed 40 surgeries and 88 dental procedures and a Greater Accra, Ghana mission reported 33 surgeries and 55 dental procedures in the organization's 2025 highlights.
Training and capacity building
AfS expanded clinician training through on-site teaching (including a multi‑case educational mission at Sohag University Hospital) and its Virtual Education Initiative, reporting hundreds of local clinicians, nurses, and students reached and hands‑on training alongside complex surgical cases to strengthen local, sustainable cleft care.
Sustained organizational growth and longevity
Founded in 2004, AfS marked more than two decades of activity with anniversary fundraising and program expansion (including fellowship programs and ongoing mission series), demonstrating continuity of operations and an active volunteer pipeline into 2025.
