Carbondale Community Nonprofit Center (Third Street Center)
Promoting community and innovation through a multi-tenant, mixed-use facility that models sustainability in its design and practice.
About Carbondale Community Nonprofit Center (Third Street Center)
Carbondale Community Nonprofit Center, publicly known as Third Street Center, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community hub that repurposed the former Carbondale Elementary School to provide long-term, affordable space for nonprofits, artists and small businesses in the Roaring Fork Valley.
Since opening in 2010 the Center has operated as a self-supporting incubator and community space, hosting hundreds of events and tens of thousands of visits annually while modeling sustainable building practices (including on-site solar generation and ongoing clean-energy initiatives).
Notable achievements
Adaptive reuse of Carbondale Elementary School
Transformed the decommissioned 1961 school into a multi-tenant community center that opened in 2010, preserving an existing building while creating space for dozens of organizations.
100%+ on-site solar generation
The Center generates more electricity than it uses from rooftop solar, making it net positive for electricity and a regional model for energy-efficient reuse.
Leadership in district-scale geothermal planning
Participated in a multi-organization coalition selected for U.S. Department of Energy design funding to explore a neighborhood geothermal heating and cooling system, advancing local decarbonization efforts.
