About ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK FOUNDATION, INC.
Founded in 1984 and fueled largely by hunters and volunteers, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to conserving and restoring elk habitat, supporting science-based wildlife management, and promoting hunting heritage and public access to land.
RMEF works nationally through a network of chapters and partners to acquire and conserve habitat, complete habitat stewardship projects (forest restoration, water/source improvements, fence removal), fund research and wildlife management, and run youth education and hunting-heritage programs.
In recent years RMEF has scaled land-conservation and access work across the United States and, as of early 2025, has surpassed nine million acres conserved or enhanced through direct projects, leveraged partner funds and volunteer efforts.

Surpassed nine million acres conserved
As of January 15, 2025, RMEF announced it had eclipsed more than 9.0 million acres of conserved or enhanced habitat across its multi-decade history.
Minam River Wildlife Area expansion (OR)
In October 2024 RMEF helped expand the Minam River Wildlife Area to 16,646 acres, securing continuous public access along nearly the full length of the Minam River and conserving key winter range and migration connectivity.
Large-scale access and acreage gains (2023–2024)
RMEF completed projects that opened or improved public access to roughly 78,000 acres in 2023 and conserved or enhanced more than 203,000 acres in 2024 through multiple state and regional initiatives.
