About ONE FOUND SOUND INC

One Found Sound (OFS) is a San Francisco–based, musician-run orchestra that operates without a conductor and emphasizes democratic decision-making, diversity, and inclusive concert experiences. The organization programs orchestral performances in relaxed, unexpected venues, commissions and premieres new works, and runs education initiatives aimed at children from underserved communities.

In recent years OFS has launched multi-year projects to recover and present neglected repertoire, sustained an Emerging Composer Award and commissioning activity, and partnered with local public agencies and community organizations to bring live, interactive music and workshops into public housing and neighborhood programs. The organization files annual Form 990 returns and maintains an active public-facing web presence and fundraising channels for donors and sponsors.

Notable achievements

Herbert Franklin Mells Project (five-year initiative)

Launched in 2023, One Found Sound began a multi-year project to prepare, premiere, record, and publish four large-scale orchestral works by Herbert Franklin Mells, including the world premiere of Symphony No. 1 (first performed March 4, 2023). The project includes public performances, commercially available recordings, and the production of first-edition scores to restore and amplify an underrepresented historical voice in American orchestral music.

Annual Emerging Composer Award & commissions

OFS maintains an Emerging Composer Award and commissioning program that has produced world premieres and new commissions (recent winners and premieres in the 2022–2025 period). The award and commissions support early-career composers and regularly place newly commissioned works on OFS concert programs.

Secured competitive public and foundation support

In the past several years the organization has received competitive municipal arts funding and foundation grants and has been included in San Francisco arts funding cycles, supporting general operating and project activity and enabling paid performance and recording projects.
