About COALITION OF ASIAN AMERICAN LEADERS

The Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL) is a statewide leadership network that emerged from Asian Minnesotan community organizing in 2013. CAAL brings together leaders across sectors, ethnicities, generations, and regions to advance policy, build civic power, and invest in community-driven solutions. CAAL operates as a donor-facing nonprofit that runs leadership development, civic-engagement, and economic programs — including the CAAL Ignite grant program — and partners with state agencies, philanthropic funders, and local organizations to expand resources and influence for Asian Minnesotans. The organization reports a statewide network of several thousand Asian Minnesotan leaders and active participation in legislative advocacy and capacity-building initiatives.

Notable achievements

Major philanthropic seed funding to launch CAAL Ignite

In December 2024 CAAL received a transformational gift from a national philanthropist to create the CAAL Ignite Fund, a statewide grant initiative that seed-funded a sustained investment strategy to support Asian American entrepreneurs, small businesses, artists, and community-rooted projects.

CAAL Ignite grantee cohort and distributed grants

CAAL launched CAAL Ignite and selected a cohort of 20 grantees in 2025, committing six-figure grant funding to community leaders and organizations; the program has reported hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants and reached grantees representing more than a dozen Asian ethnic groups across dozens of Minnesota cities.

Secured state investment for Asian Minnesotan entrepreneurs

CAAL secured a state appropriation (including a $200,000 award in the 2024 legislative session) to expand outreach, training, technical assistance, peer networks, and direct financial assistance for Asian Minnesotan women entrepreneurs and Asian-owned small businesses.
