About BREAKOUT FOUNDATION INC

Breakout Foundation operates as the grantmaking arm of Breakout, deploying unrestricted micro- and mid-sized grants to community leaders, organizers, and small grassroots organizations. The foundation emphasizes trust-based, low-friction grantmaking—using online campaigns, partner collaborations, and targeted funds to reach leaders often overlooked by traditional philanthropy. Since its founding in 2016, the foundation has partnered with established funders and civic partners to scale local grant challenges and convenings; recent activity includes a multi-year Chicago Community Fund initiative and a MacArthur Foundation–supported convening for grantees, and the launch of a Builder Fund to seed community-hosted gatherings.

Funds deployed to changemakers

Has deployed over $435,000 in unrestricted funding to community leaders and small organizations, supporting more than 130 changemakers across 20+ U.S. cities.

Chicago Community Fund grants

In partnership initiatives, awarded $165,000 to 22 local leaders and received institutional grant support to scale the Chicago Community Fund, expanding local grantmaking capacity and convening grantees.

Recent program expansion & convenings

With support from larger funders, Breakout hosted a convening for grantees in 2023 and launched the Builder Fund (spring 2025) to provide quarterly micro-grants that catalyze local gatherings and relationship-building.
