About HONOLULU CIVIL BEAT INC

Honolulu Civil Beat is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit digital news organization founded in 2010 and supported substantially by philanthropic partners and individual donors. It produces investigative, watchdog and explanatory journalism focused on Hawaiʻi state and local issues and operates as a donor-facing newsroom and community forum. In recent years Civil Beat has expanded its investigative projects, public-data tools and community engagement (newsletters, events and pop-up newsrooms), and it plays an active role in public-records litigation and reporting that holds government entities accountable.

Pulitzer Prize Finalist (2024)

Staff of Honolulu Civil Beat were named finalists for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Reporting for their coverage of the 2023 Maui wildfires, a national recognition of the newsroom’s large-scale, urgent reporting and accountability work.
