About OAKLAND LITERACY COALITION

The Oakland Literacy Coalition is a citywide nonprofit coalition and service hub that began as a partnership network in 2008 and reorganized as an independent nonprofit in 2016. It coordinates literacy service providers, schools, funders, and community partners to improve early reading outcomes and literacy access across Oakland.

OLC runs several city-facing programs — Reading Everywhere (including Action Grants and large-scale book distributions), School Library Partnerships, and the annual Literacy & Justice For All symposium — and operates the Oakland Reads multilingual resource site in partnership with Oakland Unified School District. The organization reports recent annual impact figures such as reaching hundreds of local organizations and distributing six-figure quantities of books to Oakland families, while also offering training and evidence-based resources for educators and community literacy volunteers.
