About HOMELESS YOUTH ALLIANCE INC

Homeless Youth Alliance (HYA) is a San Francisco-based nonprofit that provides street-based outreach, harm-reduction services, mental and medical care, and youth-focused drop-in programming for young people experiencing homelessness (primarily ages up to 29). The organization emphasizes peer-based outreach and low-barrier, client-driven services to engage hard-to-reach youth where they live and gather. In recent years HYA has continued mobile and pop-up operations while expanding its capacity: in November 2024 HYA announced it was occupying the historic Haight Ashbury Free Clinic site to centralize services and restore more consistent indoor drop-in hours. HYA is an active partner with local public agencies and community providers to connect youth to housing navigation, behavioral health care, and city-coordinated resources.

Notable achievements

Haight Ashbury Free Clinic site acquisition (2024)

In November 2024 HYA announced it began occupying the former Haight Ashbury Free Clinic site full time, enabling restoration and expansion of regular drop-in services, youth-only drop-in hours, on-site medical and mental health offerings, and more centralized program operations after a decade of largely street-based and pop-up services.

High-volume street outreach and contacts

HYA conducts daily street-based outreach in the Haight Ashbury area and nearby parks, reporting capacity to make over 12,000 participant contacts per year; outreach is peer-centered and is designed to build trust that leads to counseling, referrals, and service uptake.

Youth-focused syringe access and on-site medical care

HYA operates multiple syringe access and disposal sites targeted to youth and a female-identified site, with clinical volunteers providing basic medical care during exchange hours and referrals to substance-use treatment, filling an important harm-reduction niche for young injectors in San Francisco.
