About HAWAII DENTAL ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION INC

Founded as a 501(c)(3) charitable arm of Hawaii’s dental community (formed in 2017), the Hawaii Dental Association Foundation (HDAF) works to improve oral health across the state through direct service, education, and grantmaking. HDAF’s signature Give Kids a Smile Hawaii program delivers free preventive education, screenings, cleanings and fluoride treatment to keiki across multiple islands and mobilizes volunteer dentists, hygienists, and community partners. In the last 2–3 years the foundation has continued statewide GKAS clinic events, launched new educational materials (including an animated dental education video), and created a special disaster-relief fund to support dental professionals and communities affected by the 2023 Maui wildfires.

Notable achievements

Give Kids A Smile impact

The Give Kids a Smile Hawaii initiative has reached thousands of children through classroom education and clinic days — the foundation reports over 3,000 children reached via oral hygiene presentations and hundreds of children treated at free clinic events (one event treated ~350 children), supported by hundreds of volunteer hours.

Maui wildfire disaster-relief fund

In response to the 2023 Maui wildfires, HDAF established a disaster relief fund to provide immediate support to dentists and communities affected by the disaster, channeling emergency resources and coordination for impacted practitioners and services.

Annual fundraising gala & resources

The foundation’s annual Give Kids a Smile gala has become a major fundraiser and community-raising event (the 2024 gala was sold out and marked a program milestone), and HDAF has used gala proceeds to launch new education tools and recognize long-term community partners.
