About DIVISION OF INDIAN WORK

The Division of Indian Work (DIW) is an urban Native nonprofit based in Minneapolis that provides culturally grounded social services, health and wellness programming, family supports, and youth leadership development. DIW operates a range of direct services — including a culturally specific food shelf, health services, foster-care based supports, elders programming, domestic violence and anger management services, and youth after-school and enrichment activities — delivered with Indigenous values and traditional healing approaches. DIW has an active community-facing presence, longstanding partnerships with local governments, foundations and tribal nations, and produces annual reports and fundraising events to sustain programming. The organization reports multi-million dollar annual revenues and serves thousands of individuals and families each year through its programs and resource distributions.

Notable achievements

Large-scale food assistance (Horizons Unlimited)

DIW's Horizons Unlimited food shelf and seasonal drives distributed more than 1,000 holiday food baskets in 2023 and provides year-round culturally specific food support to community members.

Workforce of Indigenous health practitioners

DIW hosted an Indigenous Lactation Counselor training (Ninde) in 2023 with 21 participants, expanding culturally based maternal/infant supports and building community capacity for traditional and clinical breastfeeding support.

Sustained program funding and community fundraising

DIW maintained multi-source funding in recent years (government grants, foundations, United Way, partners) and sustained community fundraising— including events and Give to the Max activities—supporting core programs and a stable operations base.
