About ROCKY FLATS DOWNWINDERS
Rocky Flats Downwinders is a community-run 501(c)(3) organization (granted tax-exempt status in July 2017) founded in 2015 to represent and support residents who believe they were exposed to hazardous and radioactive releases from the Rocky Flats Plant near Arvada, Colorado.
The group conducts community-driven research, outreach and education, engages with public health and regulatory bodies, and organizes meetings and advocacy campaigns to increase public awareness, encourage medical recognition of potential radiation-related health effects, and pursue protective actions for current and former residents.
In recent years the organization has maintained an active community health survey effort, submitted public comments to state public health authorities, pursued public signage and information at the Rocky Flats site, and organized meetings with health professionals and policymakers.

Established community-driven health survey
Created and maintained a survey (initially developed with university partners) to document self-reported illness and generate geospatial maps used to illustrate possible correlations with historical contamination patterns.
501(c)(3) recognition
Secured federal tax-exempt status in July 2017, formalizing the group’s nonprofit status and enabling expanded fundraising and organizational work.
Recent policy engagement and public comments
Submitted formal public comment to state-level public health authorities (documented in late 2024) and continues to meet with public-health leadership to press for medical monitoring, signage, and transparency.
