About Union Square Foundation

Union Square Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization based in San Francisco that supports public-realm activations, cultural programming, and community services in the Union Square district. The Foundation is managed by the Union Square Alliance and focuses on events, beautification, and programs that drive foot traffic and economic activity for downtown businesses while creating welcoming public spaces. In the last 2–3 years the Foundation has published annual reports (beginning in 2023) and led or supported several high-profile initiatives — including the revival of Winter Walk, the Union Square in Bloom seasonal activation, public-space lighting and placemaking projects, and the Suit Up mentorship and wardrobe program for San Francisco youth. The organization works alongside city agencies, corporate sponsors, and community partners to measure visitor impact and support downtown recovery.

Notable achievements

Revival of Winter Walk (2023–2024)

Led the return and production of Winter Walk as a multi-block holiday pedestrian activation; event reporting cites measurable visitor and revenue impacts (estimated financial boost in the “tens of millions,” an 11% increase in unique daily holiday visitors, and high visitor satisfaction with 90.4% saying they would return).

Suit Up mentorship & wardrobe program

Operated an ongoing mentorship and professional-clothing program in partnership with Macy’s and community partners (cohorts since 2022), providing personalized suits, styling, life-skills mentoring, and a runway finale for participating young people from Bayview and other San Francisco programs.

Launch of annual reporting and district activations

Began producing formal annual reports in 2023 to document programmatic activity and financials, and expanded public-realm projects (lighting, public art, Union Square in Bloom seasonal programming) to drive visitation and support local businesses.
