About BROKEN SHOVELS FARM AND SANCTUARY SCHOOL

Broken Shovels operates a rescue sanctuary in the Denver metro area (Henderson/Commerce City, Colorado), providing lifetime care, rehabilitation and veterinary treatment for hundreds of farm animals across many species.

Founded as a farm operation that transitioned into a sanctuary and developing a nature‑based Sanctuary School for young children, the organization runs public visitation events, volunteer and internship programs, and emergency medical rescues.

The organization is a tax‑exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit and has been operating sanctuary programs, emergency intakes and community education activities in recent years (including documented emergency medical rescues and property expansion to increase capacity).

Notable achievements

Converted a previously operating dairy into a dedicated farm animal sanctuary and ceased animal agriculture operations to prioritize lifelong care and advocacy.

Documented emergency rescues & medical saves

Completed multiple high‑needs medical rescues and surgeries (examples in 2023), demonstrating on‑site triage, veterinary partnerships and urgent fundraising when required.

Property expansion to increase capacity

Acquired adjacent land to expand pasture and habitat space to improve animal welfare and accommodate additional rescues and program growth.
