To assist people who want to leave Scientology and the Sea Organization by providing practical support, reunification services, education grants, awareness and advocacy so they can safely transition to independent life.
About The Michael J. Rinder Aftermath Foundation
The Aftermath Foundation is a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit (tax-exempt) organized to support people leaving Scientology and the Sea Org who lack reliable support systems while rebuilding their lives.
The organization provides direct aid, a reunification/directory service, education grants, and public awareness campaigns aimed at preventing further harm and helping former members regain independence.
In the last 2–3 years the Foundation has expanded outreach through a Billboard Awareness Campaign (launched in 2024), awarded its 2024 education grant recipients, launched and maintained the Aftermath Connect reunification directory, and formed professional partnerships to strengthen services.
Notable achievements
Billboard Awareness Campaign
Launched a targeted billboard campaign in March 2024 (expanded to multiple billboards around Scientology properties) to reach isolated Sea Org members and other Scientologists; the campaign correlated with a substantial increase in website traffic and helpline calls after launch.
Rosemary Chicwak Education Grant
Established an annual education grant (up to $10,000) in honor of Rosemary Chicwak and awarded 2024 grant recipients; the program is intended to support former Scientologists and their children pursuing education or vocational training.
Aftermath Connect Reunification Service
Developed and operates Aftermath Connect, a moderated directory and matching system to help reunite families and allow confidential reporting or submission of information about missing or disconnected persons.
