About HERS

HERS is a national nonprofit that provides leadership development, career-advancement programming, and peer networks for faculty and staff in higher education, with a long history of centering women and gender-diverse leaders. The organization operates signature programs such as the nine‑day HERS Leadership Institute (HLI), virtual workshops, executive coaching circles, and career-focused workshops, and maintains an alum network of several thousand higher‑education leaders. In recent years HERS has expanded access through targeted fellowship programs and multi-year grants, transitioned to an independent national nonprofit (July 1, 2024), and continued to scale its in-person and virtual programming across institutional types.

Notable achievements

Major foundation support to expand access

In May 2024 HERS received multi-year grants totaling more than $1.1 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Henry Luce Foundation to fund fellowships and cohort-building for humanities and STEM leaders, increasing scholarship access to HERS programs.

Independent national nonprofit status

HERS completed a structural transition to become a fully independent national nonprofit organization on July 1, 2024, marking a strategic shift from its earlier university-based home to an autonomous national organization.

Scale and program reach

HERS’ flagship HLI and related programs have continued to scale: the 2025 HLI cohort included approximately 170 participants from 84 institutions across 38 U.S. states and two countries, and HERS reports a network of over 6,000 alumni from hundreds of institutions.
