About AMERICAN FOREGUT SOCIETY FOUNDATION

The American Foregut Society Foundation (AFS Foundation) is the charitable arm associated with the American Foregut Society, focused on funding research, education, and training that improve care for patients with foregut disorders.

AFS/AFS Foundation supports multidisciplinary collaboration (gastroenterology and foregut surgery), hosts an annual meeting and courses, runs a research grant program, and develops clinical/educational resources for clinicians and trainees.

In recent years AFS has published a Textbook of Foregut Disease, issued a new endoscopic classification of the esophagogastric junction, run competitive research grants, and held large annual meetings (600+ participants in 2025).

Notable achievements

AFS Textbook of Foregut Disease

Published a comprehensive clinician-focused textbook that consolidates current interdisciplinary knowledge in foregut disease for gastroenterologists, surgeons, trainees and allied professionals.

New EGJ endoscopic classification

Launched a novel endoscopic classification for the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) to standardize reporting and improve communication among endoscopists and surgeons.

Large annual meetings and partnerships

Expanded the Society’s annual meeting to several hundred participants (reported 600+ attendees in 2025) and partnered with related international groups to increase cross-disciplinary exchange.
