KAIZEN FOOD RESCUE
To advance food justice and community well-being in areas impacted by food apartheid in the Denver metro area by preventing food waste and increasing equitable access to culturally relevant, nutritious food.
About KAIZEN FOOD RESCUE
Kaizen Food Rescue is a Denver‑metro food rescue and community food access organization based in Englewood, Colorado. It operates mobile pop-up food shares, community markets, youth‑led gardens, and other programs to redistribute surplus food, center culturally relevant nutrition, and connect households to benefits and resources. Founded by Thai Nguyen in response to pandemic-era and systemic food insecurity, Kaizen partners with large food suppliers, local governments, and community groups to serve neighborhoods facing food apartheid, with a focus on dignity, food sovereignty, and community leadership. The organization reports large-scale redistribution and continues to expand through partnerships and a planned flagship food hub at Loretto Heights.
Notable achievements
Large-scale food redistribution
Cumulatively redistributed millions of pounds of food (reported as over 17.5 million pounds) and served hundreds of thousands of households through mobile pop-ups, community shares, and distribution partnerships.
Mobile pop-up network
Scaled a regular schedule of mobile, no‑contact 'food pop-up' events (hundreds per year at peak), delivering culturally relevant fresh produce, meals for children, and wraparound services such as benefits navigation and PPE distribution.
Secured public and philanthropic support to expand services
Won significant grants and partnerships (including a county grant and foundation support) and advanced a project to establish a 2,100+ sq ft flagship food hub / community market in Loretto Heights to increase year‑round access and program capacity.
