About COLORADO MOUNTAIN CLUB

The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is a nonprofit outdoor education, recreation, and conservation organization based in Golden, Colorado. Founded in 1912, CMC operates as a volunteer-powered club that teaches mountain skills, leads trips, and organizes stewardship work across Colorado and the Mountain West. CMC runs an extensive catalog of courses, schools, and trips for all ability levels, and maintains active youth programming, scholarships, volunteer trail crews, and conservation partnerships. In recent years the organization has continued to expand its schools, maintained peer-led trip leadership and safety training, and advanced stewardship projects in partnership with public-land and conservation groups.

Notable achievements

Century-long legacy (founded 1912)

CMC has operated continuously since 1912, building a long-standing reputation for mountaincraft education, advocacy and conservation in Colorado and contributing to early conservation efforts such as the movement that led to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Large-scale member programs and outreach

CMC reports a membership community in the mid-thousands (membership materials note ~6,500 members) and offers more than 3,000 trips, hikes and activities annually along with hundreds of courses and schools that teach wilderness skills and safety.

Institutional milestones around the American Mountaineering Center

CMC co-founded and co-stewarded the American Mountaineering Center and museum with the American Alpine Club (1993) and completed a strategic transaction related to the property in 2024 as the organization adjusted its facility arrangements.
