About Colorado Trout Unlimited

Colorado Trout Unlimited (CTU) is the state council of Trout Unlimited, founded in 1969 and organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. CTU coordinates 22 local chapters and thousands of volunteers across Colorado to protect, restore, and defend coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.

CTU combines on-the-ground habitat restoration, science-based advocacy, and education programs (including Trout in the Classroom and youth conservation camps). In recent years (2023–2025) CTU has expanded headwaters restoration projects, increased youth education recognition, and led statewide monitoring and response efforts for emerging threats such as invasive zebra mussels.

Notable achievements

Longstanding statewide impact

Founded in 1969, CTU has built a statewide volunteer network of chapters and volunteers that delivers tens of thousands of annual volunteer hours to restoration, education, and advocacy.

Colorado TU’s education work — including Trout in the Classroom and school-stream programs — received formal recognition and increased visibility statewide in 2025 as a model for water education and youth engagement.

Recent headwaters restoration work

In 2023–2025 CTU intensified restoration and reclamation projects in Colorado headwaters, advancing on-the-ground mine remediation, stream repairs, and multi-stakeholder projects to improve water quality and fish habitat.
