About The Mount Sopris Historical Society (operating as Carbondale Historical Society)

Founded and chartered in the 1980s, the organization preserves local historic structures, artifacts, archives and oral histories for Carbondale and the surrounding Crystal River and Roaring Fork Valleys.

The society operates and stewards several local historic sites (including a 19th‑century log cabin, the Old Jailhouse, and the Thompson House Museum), maintains a research library of local materials, and presents public programming and exhibits to connect residents and visitors with regional history.

In recent years the organization has rebranded publicly as the Carbondale Historical Society, run membership drives tied to community festivals, and received community grant support to sustain operations and exhibitions.
