About WESTERN COLORADO INTERPRETIVE ASSOCIATION, INC.
Founded in 1988, the Western Colorado Interpretive Association (also operating as the Interpretive Association of Western Colorado) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that partners with federal land agencies (USFS and BLM), state agencies and local organizations to fund, manage and deliver interpretive and preservation projects across an eight-county region of western Colorado.
The organization secures and administers grants, produces signage, brochures and media, operates regional bookstores/sales outlets, and supports K–12 and public education programs so visitors and local communities better understand, value and help protect public lands and cultural resources.
Notable achievements
Hanging Flume reconstruction
Supported reconstruction, interpretation and stewardship efforts for the historic Hanging Flume along the San Miguel River, preserving a distinctive engineering and mining-era feature.
Alpine Tunnel stabilization & signage
Administered funding and produced interpretive materials and wayfinding for the Alpine Tunnel Historic District, including stabilization and informational resources to protect and interpret the site.
Driggs Mansion and Hotchkiss barn preservation
Led or supported stabilization and restoration planning for historic structures such as the Driggs Mansion and the Enos T. Hotchkiss Barn, pairing preservation work with interpretive signage and media.
