ROCKY MOUNTAIN BUTTERFLY CONSORTIUM
The Rocky Mountain Butterfly Consortium (dba Butterfly Pavilion) fosters an appreciation of invertebrates by educating the public about the need to protect and care for threatened habitats globally while conducting research to develop solutions in invertebrate conservation.
About ROCKY MOUNTAIN BUTTERFLY CONSORTIUM
Butterfly Pavilion, legally the Rocky Mountain Butterfly Consortium, is the world’s first stand-alone Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited invertebrate zoo. Founded in 1990, the organization operates an eleven-acre campus provided by the City of Westminster and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Through hands-on exhibits, field research, conservation partnerships, and educational programs for schools and families, Butterfly Pavilion advances invertebrate science, restores pollinator habitat, and delivers community-facing learning experiences across Colorado and through global projects.
Notable achievements
First stand-alone AZA-accredited invertebrate zoo
Established and operated as the world’s first stand-alone invertebrate zoo, Butterfly Pavilion holds Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation and has built a recognized model for invertebrate care, research, and public education.
Successful Colorado firefly lifecycle under human care
The Pavilion’s science team completed the full lifecycle of a Colorado firefly in human care — a notable conservation and husbandry milestone that supports research and restoration efforts for rare bioluminescent insects.
Facility expansion and exhibit development
In recent years the organization secured a Letter of Intent with the City of Westminster for a phased renovation and expansion of its campus and has advanced major exhibit projects (including a Water’s Edge expansion and new animal exhibit debuts) to broaden research and visitor experiences.
