About SME FOUNDATION

SME Foundation (EIN 84-1175450) is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) public charity that supports education, scholarships, research fellowships and K–12 outreach connected to mining, metallurgy and mineral resources. The Foundation is the fundraising and grantmaking arm associated with the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration and focuses on sustaining academic programs, building the workforce pipeline, and increasing public awareness about mining’s role in modern life.

Programs include named undergraduate and graduate scholarships, a multi-year PhD Fellowship and Academic Career Development Grant program to support faculty and doctoral students, K–12 mining/minerals outreach (including merit-badge and classroom materials), and donor events and corporate partnership initiatives to raise funds for these programs. In recent years the Foundation has continued regular scholarship cycles, an active PhD/academic grant program, and high-profile fundraising events and corporate partner support.

Notable achievements

PhD Fellowship & Career Development Grants

The Foundation’s multi-year PhD Fellowship and Academic Career Development Grant programs have funded dozens of PhD students and tenure-track faculty; by mid-2025 these programs had supported more than 40 recipients with total commitments exceeding several million dollars to sustain mining academic programs and future faculty.

Annual Scholarship Awards

SME Foundation and its SME divisions collectively awarded substantial scholarship support in recent years (over $700,000 reported in the 2023 scholarship season) across multiple named undergraduate and graduate scholarships.

Significant Grantmaking (2019–2023)

Between 2019 and 2023 the Foundation recorded multi‑million dollar grant activity (several large grants and multi-year commitments) to support university research, student support, and outreach programs.
