PROJECT SALVADOR CRAFTS, INC. (dba Project El Salvador)
To aid the people of El Salvador in implementing their own vision of justice by supporting grassroots community development, marketing fair-trade crafts (historically), and creating awareness in the United States about the needs of marginalized Salvadoran communities.
About PROJECT SALVADOR CRAFTS, INC. (dba Project El Salvador)
Project Salvador Crafts, Inc. (doing business as Project El Salvador) is a U.S.-incorporated nonprofit that has worked with Salvadoran grassroots groups since 1986 to support community development projects including microlending, community radio, community organizing, arts-for-peace activities, and scholarships.
Historically the organization operated a fair-trade crafts sales program that generated substantial income for artisan groups; the board closed the crafts operation in 2014 and refocused on direct community development work (microlending, Center for Arts for Peace, PICO community organizing, Radio Victoria and scholarship support).
Public-facing updates on the organization's website and public profiles are limited in the last 2–3 years; the organization’s official materials indicate ongoing support for long-standing program areas (microlending, community radio, arts-for-peace and local organizing) but provide few dated progress reports for 2022–2025.
Notable achievements
Crafts Program Sales
The Project Salvador crafts program (People of Hope Crafts) generated more than $1.4 million in sales between the late 1980s and 2013, supporting scores of artisan groups across El Salvador before the crafts operation closed in 2014.
Earthquake Reconstruction Campaign
Organized a multi-year reconstruction campaign after the 2001 earthquakes that raised funds (in excess of $200,000) to support housing reconstruction in affected Salvadoran parishes.
Karen Adams Microlending Impact
Established from an estate gift in 2005, the microlending project expanded to multiple communities and has supported hundreds of women and their families through small loans, training and near-universal repayment rates in earlier reporting.
