About Public Radio for the Front Range (KRFC 88.9 FM)
Public Radio for the Front Range (doing business as KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins) is an independent, volunteer-powered 501(c)(3) community radio station based in the Fort Collins Music District. The station broadcasts locally on 88.9 FM and streams online, offering an eclectic mix of music, local news and public affairs.
KRFC’s programming is created primarily by volunteers (the station reports volunteers donate more than 40,000 hours annually) and includes in-studio live performance series and community-focused public affairs. The station expanded its broadcast footprint with a new, station-owned 50 kW tower to reach a substantially larger Front Range audience.
Notable achievements
50 kW tower launch (expanded coverage)
Installed and activated a station-owned 50 kW transmitter and tower (went live May 12, 2022), significantly expanding KRFC’s broadcast footprint and potential audience across the Front Range.
New community-facing content platform
Launched 'KRFC Inroads' (a multimedia community/music blog and engagement project) in 2024 to spotlight Colorado and international music scenes and prioritize inclusive community engagement.
Leadership transition and continued community funding
Completed an executive leadership transition in late 2024 and continued to secure community support and local grants (including community grant support in 2025) to sustain programming and volunteer initiatives.
