About Friends of Roxborough State Park

Friends of Roxborough State Park is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) organization formed in 1994 to support Roxborough State Park through fundraising, education, volunteer coordination, and project funding. The group works in partnership with park staff to enhance visitor programs, fund facilities and interpretive resources, and help protect park lands.

In recent years the Friends have focused on interpretive education (including the Barbara Fritts Scholarship Fund for school groups), Leave No Trace stewardship programming, and facility improvements such as shade structures, memorial benches, a Volunteer Legacy Garden, audio/visual upgrades, and a covered pavilion project to better host school and community programs.

Notable achievements

Land acquisition fundraising

Since its founding the Friends have helped raise significant funds (historically reported at over $450,000) to support multiple land acquisitions that expanded the park from its original acreage to over 3,400 acres.

Leave No Trace Gold designation

Partnered with park staff and volunteers to achieve and maintain Leave No Trace Gold Standard status for Roxborough State Park, with a redesignation reported in 2025 for continued excellence in stewardship education.

Visitor facilities financed

Funded and installed multiple visitor enhancements—memorial benches, a seasonal shade sail, Volunteer Legacy Garden, AV modernization—and led fundraising for a covered pavilion to improve school and public programming.
