About Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy (Gunnison Legacy Fund)
Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy (also known as Gunnison Legacy Fund) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works on behalf of private landowners and ranching families in the Gunnison Basin to place and fund conservation easements that protect agricultural production and wildlife habitat.
The organization provides technical, legal and funding support to complete easement transactions, partners with established land trusts to hold easements, and has assisted landowners in conserving tens of thousands of acres across Gunnison County and nearby areas. In the last 2–3 years GRCL has closed multiple large easements (notably in 2022–2024) and participated in applied soil-carbon and rangeland research to support working-land stewardship.
Notable achievements
64,000+ acres conserved
Since its founding in 1995, GRCL has helped landowners conserve well over sixty thousand acres of ranchland in the Gunnison region through easements, protecting agricultural production, water resources and wildlife habitat.
Troupe Land & Cattle easement (2023)
Facilitated a donated conservation easement protecting approximately 1,277 acres in the Upper Ohio Creek Valley with transaction-expense support from local preservation funds.
Aspen Leaf Ranch easement (2024)
Helped complete a 984‑acre easement in the Upper Muddy area that protects agricultural uses and important wildlife habitat.
