About COLORADO FOURTEENERS INITIATIVE

Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) is a donor-facing 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Lakewood, Colorado that builds, restores, and maintains sustainable hiking routes on Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks while educating hikers about Leave No Trace and other stewardship practices. CFI works in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, local partners, volunteers, and donors to close, stabilize, and restore heavily impacted alpine areas so peaks remain accessible without destructive social trails or permanent closures.

In the last several years CFI has led large-scale trail construction and restoration campaigns (notably on Mount Shavano), supported partner land acquisitions that secured public access to summits such as Mount Democrat, and expanded seasonal crew and volunteer programs. The organization also develops and publishes statewide use estimates and route-condition data to guide prioritization of stewardship work and inform public education efforts.

Notable achievements

Secured public access to Mount Democrat (2023)

CFI provided funding and partnership support that helped enable The Conservation Fund and the U.S. Forest Service to secure and transfer roughly 300 acres at Mount Democrat, removing long-standing private-land barriers and allowing CFI to begin prioritized trail work.

Major Mount Shavano trail reconstruction (2022–2026)

CFI planned and led a multi-year effort on Mount Shavano that opened lower bypasses in 2023–2024, completed extensive alpine stonework and full-bench construction, and aimed to finish remaining trail sections during the 2026 field season.

Expanded field crews, volunteer stewardship, and visitor data programs

CFI operates seasonally deployed trail-construction crews and Peak Steward education teams and has scaled volunteer stewardship and hiker-use monitoring; CFI’s statewide visitation estimates (recently reported) show annual 14er use in the mid-hundreds of thousands, informing priority-setting and outreach.
