About Crested Butte Wildflower Festival
The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival is a nonprofit, community-based festival founded in 1986 that organizes an annual series of botany-led hikes, workshops and arts programs celebrating the montane and alpine wildflower habitats of the Gunnison Valley.
Held each July as a roughly 10-day program of 100–200+ events (guided hikes, art and photography classes, talks and culinary/medicinal-plant sessions), the Festival emphasizes education, Leave No Trace ethics, and broad community access; recent seasons (including 2023–2025) have introduced expanded youth and bilingual offerings and returned program scale following pandemic interruptions.

Founded in 1986, the Festival has grown from a weekend event to a multi-day annual program offering well over 100 events and engaging dozens of instructors and volunteers.
Contributed to ‘Wildflower Capital’ recognition
The Festival helped raise public awareness of Crested Butte’s wildflower resources; the valley was formally recognized by Colorado as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado in 1990.
Expanded youth and accessibility initiatives (recent)
In the last 2–3 years the Festival rolled out targeted youth materials and programs (the C‑Bees activity workbooks) and added Spanish-language identification hikes and pre-festival events to broaden participation.
