MDHI leads and advances collaboration to end homelessness in Metro Denver by coordinating the region’s Continuum of Care and using data-driven, equitable strategies to ensure everyone has a safe, stable place to call home.
About Metro Denver Homeless Initiative
Metro Denver Homeless Initiative (MDHI) is the HUD-designated Continuum of Care for the seven-county Metro Denver region (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson). MDHI is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 84-1359401) that convenes nonprofit and government partners, people with lived experience, and funders to align resources and policy.
In the last 2–3 years MDHI has led the region’s annual Point-in-Time (PIT) counts, released a Colorado State of Homelessness report (first statewide report released on behalf of Colorado’s CoCs in 2025), supported Built for Zero efforts that reduced veteran homelessness regionally, and updated coordinated entry and HMIS practices to improve equitable access to housing.
MDHI’s core approach emphasizes high-quality data (HMIS/By-Name Lists), coordinated entry, prevention/diversion, and training/capacity building for providers so the system can make homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring.
Notable achievements
2025 PIT: 10,774 counted
The 2025 Point‑in‑Time count reported 10,774 people across the Metro Denver region, documenting a shift toward more people being sheltered, fewer sleeping outdoors, and fewer newly homeless—evidence MDHI cites of coordinated system impact.
State of Homelessness report (2025)
MDHI led and released Colorado’s first statewide State of Homelessness report on behalf of the state’s CoCs, compiling COHMIS, PIT, and education data to provide a broader baseline for planning and investment.
Douglas County Functional Zero (veterans)
In November 2024 MDHI-supported Built for Zero work contributed to Douglas County achieving functional zero for veteran homelessness, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated, data-driven strategies at the county level.
