About HEADWATERS TRAILS ALLIANCE
Headwaters Trails Alliance (HTA) is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that advocates for, plans, builds, maintains, and promotes an interconnected, multi-user trail system across Grand County (the headwaters region of the Colorado River).
HTA runs coordinated field crews and volunteer programs, operates countywide stewardship initiatives (Adopt‑A‑Trail, Stewardship Ambassadors), administers a winter grooming program and community events, and partners with federal, state and local land managers to secure funding and deliver sustainable trail infrastructure and outreach.
Notable achievements
Countywide trail stewardship scale-up
Expanded coordinated maintenance and volunteer programs to support hundreds of miles of multi‑use trails and formalized the Adopt‑A‑Trail program to sustain long‑term upkeep.
Robust volunteer & field outputs
Across recent field seasons HTA has reported large volunteer engagement and substantial field work metrics (thousands of volunteer hours, miles of trail maintained/assessed, extensive drainage and reroute work) supporting trail sustainability.
Regional recognition and partnerships
Established long‑standing partnerships with USFS, county and municipal agencies and other regional groups and has been recognized for regional partnership contributions for its trail stewardship work.
