About Vail Pass Task Force

Vail Pass Task Force is a volunteer 501(c)(3) cooperator that works in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to manage the 55,000‑acre Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area. Board membership is intentionally split between motorized and non‑motorized representatives to balance varied user needs.

The organization helps administer the site’s fee demo program, funds and coordinates trail grooming, plowing, ranger patrols, signage, and visitor information, and supports avalanche awareness and safety efforts through partnerships with regional agencies and volunteer groups.

Recent years have seen increased use of the area and corresponding expansion of grooming frequency, staffing, and visitor services to maintain trail quality, public safety, and resource protection.

Notable achievements

Formal cooperator agreement with USFS

Established and maintains a cooperative shared‑stewardship arrangement with the White River National Forest (Dillon and Holy Cross/Eagle Ranger Districts) to jointly manage the Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area.

Sustained, multi‑use trail system management

Successfully administers a complex, balanced system of motorized and non‑motorized designations, maps, signage and enforcement across 55,000 acres to reduce user conflict and protect sensitive resources.

Expanded grooming and visitor services

Responded to rising winter use by increasing grooming frequency, adding staffing coverage and supporting infrastructure (automated fee machines, signage, beacon checkpoints) to improve trail quality and safety.
