About Community Radio for Northern Colorado (DBA KUNC & The Colorado Sound)
Community Radio for Northern Colorado (CRNC) is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that owns and operates NPR-affiliate KUNC (news/public affairs) and The Colorado Sound (noncommercial music discovery).
CRNC delivers in-depth local journalism, investigative reporting and podcasts while also running a statewide music discovery service that highlights Colorado artists; the organization is listener-supported and sustained largely through memberships, underwriting and community fundraising.
Notable achievements
National Edward R. Murrow Award (2024)
Won a national Murrow Award in 2024 for a podcast series about the Colorado River ('Thirst Gap'), recognizing excellence in audio journalism and the station’s impact on environmental reporting.
Multiple regional Edward R. Murrow Awards (2024–2025)
Received several regional Murrow Awards for investigative and continuing coverage — including recognition for coverage of youth mental health, wildfire reporting and broader newsroom excellence in 2024 and 2025.
High-impact regional reporting and podcasts
Produced multi-episode reporting projects and podcasts (examples in recent years include series on youth mental health, housing insecurity among students, and long-form Colorado River coverage) that informed policy conversations and community responses.
