About MOUNTAIN GORILLA CONSERVATION FUND
The Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund (MGCF) is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the long‑term protection of mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. MGCF carries out veterinary, education, community-development and awareness programs in partnership with local wildlife authorities and universities.
MGCF’s work includes wildlife veterinary training and research capacity building, school and community education programs, sanitation and livelihood projects to reduce habitat pressure, and recurring public fundraising/awareness events (for example Gorilla Runs and regional benefit events). Recent public filings and organizational summaries show continued operations and fundraising activity through 2023.
Notable achievements
Introduced wildlife veterinary program
Pioneered in‑field wildlife veterinary care for mountain gorillas (the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project/Gorilla Doctors model) and supported on‑site veterinary response capacity.
Established wildlife health training capacity
Supported development of formal wildlife health training (WARM at Makerere University) and the Ruth Keesling Wildlife Health and Research Center to train African wildlife veterinarians and researchers.
Long‑term population support
Contributed, through veterinary care, community programs and partnerships, to long‑term conservation efforts that the organization reports have supported the recovery trend in mountain gorilla numbers.
