About Friends of Four Star, Inc.

Friends of Four Star, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established to restore and operate the historic Four Star Theatre (1944 Division Ave S) as a community-centered arts venue. Founded in 2020, the organization leads renovation, programming, and community engagement efforts to reactivate the theater as a multicultural hub for music, storytelling, theater, and neighborhood events. In the last 2–3 years Friends of Four Star completed a Phase I renovation that brought life-safety systems, basic lighting, restroom and mechanical activation, and audiovisual upgrades, enabling limited occupancy and public programming. Since that activation the venue has hosted community events, short-term residencies, and grassroots cultural programming while building partnerships with local funders, arts groups, and county and city agencies. Friends of Four Star operates as a donor-facing nonprofit with an active web presence, regular public events, fundraising campaigns, and documented Form 990 filings; it continues capital fundraising and phased renovation work toward full restoration and expanded programming.

Notable achievements

Phase I Renovation and Limited Reopening

Completed an initial renovation phase that installed life-safety systems (fire suppression/alarm), upgraded lighting, activated bathrooms and mechanical systems, and added permanent sound/projection infrastructure—allowing limited public occupancy and staged events.

Community Activation and Early Programming

Activated the venue with programming that engaged community participants and audiences: hired a small crew for operations, engaged dozens of contract workers and volunteers, and produced events that served over 1,000 patrons during early activation periods.

Secured Multi-source Funding for Renovation

Assembled a capital and project funding mix including local government allocations and foundation grants to support the theater’s renovation and operations, enabling progression from planning into construction and activation phases.
