About Native Sun Community Power Development

Native Sun Community Power Development is a Native-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2019 and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The organization advances energy sovereignty, climate resilience, and economic justice for Tribal and rural communities through advocacy, technical assistance, workforce training, and community-led renewable energy projects. Native Sun leads regional initiatives such as Electric Nation™, workforce development programs, and culturally grounded youth education (Solar Cub), placing Indigenous leadership, traditional ecological knowledge, and the seven-generations principle at the center of its work. In recent years the organization has engaged 50+ communities, mobilized multi-million dollar federal and partner funding for Tribal clean-energy infrastructure, and supported direct installations of EV chargers and community energy projects across the Upper Midwest and beyond.

Notable achievements

Electric Nation™ — DOE‑funded inter‑Tribal EV network

Led the Electric Nation™ initiative (a multi‑million‑dollar, Department of Energy‑supported project) to plan and deploy an inter‑Tribal EV charging network across the Upper Midwest; the project scope includes over 120 chargers and multiple electric vehicles for Tribal fleets.

Regional program expansion and installations

Supported the planning, siting, and construction of community EV chargers and partnered projects (including tribal solar arrays and community solar gardens) across multiple states, and has expanded Electric Nation operations into the Pacific Northwest.

Culturally grounded workforce & youth programs

Developed workforce training for green‑energy trades (with stipends, certifications, and wraparound supports) and created Solar Cub, a culturally relevant STEM/solar education module for Native youth in partnership with Tribal schools.
