About CENTER FOR COLLABORATIVE INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM

The Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ) is a nonprofit investigative journalism network based in Grand Rapids, Michigan that supports and produces cross-border, collaborative reporting. CCIJ works with journalists, data analysts, and visual storytellers to publish investigations, build reporting capacity, and create shared tools and publishing spaces for partner newsrooms.

CCIJ operates a decentralized model with regional hubs, a leadership team of professional journalists, and public-facing initiatives (including a publishing platform and a podcast) designed to expand access to high-quality investigative reporting and to amplify local accountability journalism.

Notable achievements

Established as a tax-exempt nonprofit and fiscal growth

CCIJ received 501(c)(3) status in 2020 and has grown its operating capacity and balance sheet since then; the organization reported a substantial increase in revenue in 2023 compared with earlier years, supporting its expansion of programs and staff.

Built an international collaborative reporting network

CCIJ developed a network model with regional hubs and partnerships that enable cross-border investigations and shared reporting resources, connecting reporters, data experts, and visual storytellers to pursue coordinated, impact-oriented journalism.

Launched public-facing content and capacity programs

CCIJ launched VEZA as a publishing space and produced the 'Transparency Talks' podcast and other training/knowledge-sharing activities to distribute investigations, host conversations about transparency and accountability, and support journalist development.
