The Gunnison Creative District strengthens and enlivens Gunnison by building community connections, encouraging economic activity, and highlighting the community’s identity through the flourishing presence of creative industries and public art.
About GUNNISON CREATIVE DISTRICT
Gunnison Creative District is a community-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit that manages Gunnison’s state-recognized Creative District designation and supports local artists, public art, and creative programming across the valley.
Since receiving official Creative District recognition in 2022, the organization has focused on public murals and sculpture, monthly First Friday art programming, a valley-wide creative directory, artist promotion, and maintenance of public artwork.
In the last several years the district has completed multiple public-art projects, expanded community-engagement events (including First Fridays and a Studio Tour), and partnered with regional arts organizations to broaden visibility and economic opportunities for local creatives.
Notable achievements
State Creative District designation
Gunnison was officially designated a Colorado Creative District (managed by the nonprofit) in 2022, creating access to state-level resources and recognition for the local creative economy.
Public murals program
Completed multiple community-driven murals (three completed in 2023) and launched additional mural projects and sculptural works in subsequent years, including a community-generated mural celebrating immigrant culture.
Sustained First Fridays leadership
Stewardship and promotion of the monthly First Fridays Art Walk & Music, a long-running cultural tradition that activates downtown and supports local artists and businesses.
