About BUILD A SCHOOL INITIATIVES IN AFRICA INC

Build a School Initiatives in Africa (BASIA) is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that funds and manages construction, renovation, and startup of K–12 school facilities across multiple countries in West and West-Central Africa. The organization works with local communities and partners to deliver classrooms, basic school infrastructure, learning materials, teacher training, technology in the classroom, and in-school feeding programs.

Since its founding, BASIA has focused on donor-sponsored projects that are planned, executed, and handed over to local stakeholders to support long-term school operations. In recent years the organization has expanded its project portfolio across Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana and neighboring countries and reported multi‑million dollar contribution levels on its most recent public filings, reflecting scaled fundraising and program activity.

Notable achievements

Multiple completed school construction and handovers

Executed and commissioned a series of school-building projects across West Africa—examples on BASIA's project pages include MEMOMAC Community School (began accepting students in September 2021), Community Primary School (Amandim Olo, Enugu) and several nursery/primary and secondary projects that were completed and handed over to local stakeholders.

Scaling program funding

Reported multi‑million dollar contribution totals on recent Form 990 filings (contributions of approximately $3.16M in FY2023 and $2.15M in FY2024), indicating expanded donor support and larger project throughput in the last 2–3 years.

Local partnerships and community-driven model

Operates with a community-engagement model in which BASIA funds key materials and skilled labor while communities contribute local materials and support; BASIA also documents partnerships with donor agencies and membership in regional school-coalition initiatives to strengthen project transparency and ownership.
